LEXINGTON, Ky. (MCVL.org) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released its 2017 Preseason Poll on Wednesday and included three teams from the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL). Carthage begins the year at No. 4 while MSOE and Dominican check in at No. 12 and 13, respectively.
A season after making an appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship, the Red Men begin the year at No. 4 with 203 points in the poll. Carthage opens its season on Jan. 14 against Clarke at home. Griffin Sheilds and Matt Reinsel lead the Red Men as returning All-MCVL picks from a season ago.
At No. 12 with 70 points, MSOE looks to build off an 18-8 season in 2016 and an appearance in the MCVL Tournament Championship. Quin Krisik returns for the Raiders as one of two setters from last year's All-MCVL squad. MSOE begins its campaign on Feb. 2 at home against North Central.
After being picked second in the preseason MCVL poll, the Stars are coming off a 17-9 season in 201 and begin the year at No. 13 with 55 points. Dominican claimed the final spot in last season's conference tournament before bowing out to Carthage in three sets. Junior Luke Spicer returns as an All-MCVL selection after totaling 285 kills and a .249 attack percentage. The Stars kick off their season at home on Jan. 20 against NYU.
Mount St. Joseph was one of five teams receiving votes in the poll.
The MCVL begins its third year of existence in 2017 and its first as a full-fledged conference, which includes 14 members. For the first time in league history, the MCVL Tournament Champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championships.
